To say “are” in Jamaican the word “ah” is often used. We’ll give some examples of the word “ah” being used.
In Jamaican dialect “ah” means “are.”
Here are a few examples:
Dem ah – They are
Wi ah – We are
Dem ah guh guh – They are going to go (“ah guh” means “are going” or “are going to”).
Wi ah guh guh – We are going to go
To say “am” (as in I am) the word “ah” is also used.
Example:
mi ah – I am
mi ah guh guh – I am going to go
With practice you should be able to distinguish between the use of “ah” when used to mean “are” and “ah” when used to mean “I am.” A hint is that when we say “I am” the “ah” is preceded by the word “mi.”
